STROKE
A stroke is a brain attack.
It occurs when an artery bringing blood to the Brain becomes clogged or ruptures, depriving a part of the brain of the oxygen it needs.
Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 101 patients had the diagnosis of stroke. In this year 53% of all stroke patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

This system, called “FIM” allows us to measure areas of improvement in your abilities from the time of admission to discharge from the rehab unit. This information shows that the average stroke patient is admitted with an average score of 57.1 and is discharged with an average score of 81.2. This shows an improvement of approximately 24.1%.
ORTHOPEDIC
Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 99 patients had an orthopedic diagnosis. In this year 83% of all orthopedic patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 27 patients had a non-traumatic brain injury diagnosis. In this year 70% of all non-traumatic brain injury patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 20 patients had a diagnosis of Spinal Cord Injury. In this year 70% of all Spinal Cord Injury patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

NEUROLOGY
Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 15 patients had a Neurology diagnosis. In this year 80% of all Neurology patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

DEBILITATION
Debilitation is a disabling condition of the heart, lungs and muscles that occurs while dealing with an acute illness. Patients are often unable to walk or care for themselves without assistance. Through rehabilitation many patients can achieve complete independence.
Of the 331 admissions we accepted in FY 2008, 26 patients had a diagnosis of Debilitation. In this year 85% of all Debilitation patients who received their care at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital returned to the community-either to their own home or with their family/friends.

LOWER EXTREMITY AMPUTATION
An amputation is when someone has had surgical removal of part or all of a limb. Rehabilitation consists of teaching the patient to accommodate for their missing limb and (in some cases) training them to us a prosthetic device. |
