Our Mission is to promote health and restore function.

Our 16 bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is the only accredited acute rehabilitation unit in Eastern Connecticut.  The interdisciplinary team works with patients hospitalized because of stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, amputees, or those with advanced medical conditions.

We provide a rehabilitation plan of care via a high quality, comprehensive, interdisciplinary team approach that incorporates the unique needs and choices of our patients and their caregivers 7 days a week. Our interdisciplinary team works with each patient and family to maximize recovery of abilities and personal independence.

Physiatrist

The doctor responsible for your care while on the Rehabilitation Unit is called a Physiatrist, a specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine who:
  • Coordinates medical and therapy treatment
  • Monitors progress daily
  • May follow your progress through office visits after your discharge.
Audiologist An Audiologist is a specialist in working with people who have a hearing impairment. The Audiologist may be consulted if you have a hearing impairment which affects your participation in therapy.
Case Manager/Discharge Planner A Registered Nurse who assists you and your family in preparing for your discharge by:
  • Responding to insurance review requirements
  • Coordinating discharge needs
  • Making appropriate referrals
  • Assist in ordering equipment
  • Home care/Home therapy
  • Outpatient therapy (L&M, Pequot Health Center, Flanders Health Center, Old Saybrook Outpatient Center)
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Uses a variety of therapeutic recreation activities to work with you in supporting:
  • Social interaction skills
  • Adaptive leisure skills
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Quality of life issues
  • Pain Management
  • Gross and fine motor skills
  • Endurance, balance and coordination
Dietitian Proper nutrition is important to recovery and maintaining the highest possible level of wellness. The Registered Dietitian will:
  • Assess the nutritional status of patients
  • Provide nutrition and diet education regarding special dietary needs.
Neuropsychologist Patients who are recovering from an acute disabling condition deal with a variety of conflicting and confusing problems. Neurological conditions, in particular, directly affect and impair cognition and emotional processes. The Neuropsychologist may be consulted to evaluate your thinking and memory and provide specific interventions as needed.
Occupational Therapist The primary role is to assist you in becoming as independent as possible in your daily activities. They will address your functional needs:
  • Self-care and homemaking skills
  • Strength and coordination
  • Sensory and cognitive skills
  • Visual and perceptual skills
  • Use of adaptive equipment
  • Home evaluation to plan for discharge
Physical Therapist Will work with you to achieve the greatest functional use of your body. Your therapy may include:
  • Exercise for strength and endurance
  • Wheelchair mobility or walking
  • Appropriateness for braces or artificial limbs
  • Home evaluation to plan for discharge needs
  • Discharge recommendations for any needed equipment
Rehabilitation Nurse Enhances your recovery by promoting realistic independence and adjustment to changes you are experiencing. The Rehabilitation Nurse:
  • Counsels and provides direct nursing care
  • Assesses skin condition
  • Manages health concerns
  • Teaches the use of medications at home
  • Provides around-the-clock care and support to the patient and family
Social Worker Assists patients and families with social, emotional, and financial problems which may arise as the result of illness.
Speech and Language Pathologist Is trained to evaluate and treat people with communication and swallowing problems. Goals focus on:
  • Speech (voice, articulation)
  • Language (understanding, speaking, reading, writing, gestures)
  • Cognition (memory, reasoning, organization)
  • Swallowing
